When that old sofa is just too hard to look at any longer, many people haul it to a thrift shop or place it in the garage sale with a sign that says, "Best Offer". This could be a regrettable decision. It is true, in some cases, that upholstering can cost the same or even more than a new piece of furniture; however, there are many factors to consider before heading to the furniture store.
If the current piece of furniture was fairly expensive when purchased, and has a pleasant style with a sturdy, hardwood frame of oak, maple, or mahogany, there is no reason to replace it. New furniture pieces, manufactured today, do not always have a solid, hardwood frame, unless one is willing to pay the price for a high-end, name brand. Estate sales are a great place to find old, quality built pieces that can be purchased for a minimal cost.
When reupholstering, one does not have to settle for the existing fabric, as with store bought furniture. Attempting to decorate around the new piece can also be an added expense. Most upholsterers will have a set price per yard, usually $36.00 to $40.00, to reupholster furniture using the customer's fabric. This is a good example of when internet shopping can be helpful. Many fabric stores on the web sell high quality fabrics for a fourth of the cost at the upholstery shop. Most companies are also willing to send swatches at no charge.
Choosing a type of fabric also takes some investigative work. Most fabric is sold with a waterproofing application; check with the supplier. If children and animals are in the home, a tough, durable fabric would be suitable. If the piece is in a formal area that receives little traffic, light color choices and fabric texture will not be of major importance. Carpet, drapes, and other dcor in the room will also have to be considered.
When choosing fabric patterns, keep in mind that small patterns look better on small pieces, as well, choose large patterns for a large sofa or sectional. Fabrics with a repeating pattern will take more yardage and consequently cost more for the fabric and labor.
Cotton, polyester, and nylon blends generally wear well, if the thread count is fairly high. Quality tapestry and jacquard fabrics are tough and durable with a high thread count, and come in a variety of patterns. Denim and fabrics with high nylon content are good choices for a family room, as they can take a lot of abuse. Leather works well in an office or den, giving that rich, business quality; however, it will be much more costly. Save the silk and chenille for furniture pieces that will not be used frequently.
Choosing an upholsterer is more than researching the yellow pages. Request estimates at no charge. Write down the yardage and prices that are quoted and schedule several estimates from different shops. Request a name of a recent customer that can be contacted for a reference. Visit the shop and see the employees in action. A reputable upholsterer will always strip the old fabric, re-tie springs, re-pad the back and arms, and rewrap the cushions. It is a good idea to purchase new foam for the cushions, if possible. A high density, long-lasting foam for a two-cushion sofa should cost about $80.00.
Reupholstering solid, well-built furniture, using fabric purchased from an internet wholesale site, can be quite cost-effective. Furthermore, reupholstering can be considered a contribution to recycling. The customer will also have the exact fabric they choose, insuring years of wear and enjoyment.
