Embracing the versatility of African-American hair

African American hair is extremely versatile. However, some girls become irritable in trying to style their hair, perhaps through lack of creativity. Yet, there are many hair styles that girls can choose from, and inspiration can be sought in beautiful women of color, for example, Beyonce and Brandy, who are experts in the versatility field.

The first step in achieving a versatile hair style is by visiting the salon once a week. Maintaining hair at home is done by thoroughly shampooing, conditioning and regularly using hot oil treatments to stop the hair from drying out. Hot oil treatment also keeps the hair and scalp moisturized, and gives hair a healthy sheen. Protect the hair shaft and scalp with a heat protection spray before using thermal irons and other heat styling aids.

Below are some of the ways that African American hair can be versatile in Spring 2009.

Long Hair

Tying long hair back in a ponytail is convenient, but, why not opt for a low maintenance, bouncy curly style. After shampooing and conditioning hair, blow-dry straight, and center part. Soft curls can be created using a large thermal iron, for that DJ Kiss look. Tighter curls can be achieved, like that of Nicole Fiscella.

Beyonce has set the new hair trend with her simple retro look, which is very much reminiscent of the 80's coiffure. Blow dry hair for a bone straight look. Part the hair into two from ear to ear; again blow drying the back section for a sleek bone straight style. The front is bumped up with a ceramic iron, curled, and pinned back to create a hump in the crown area. The straight section can be loosely rolled for versatility.

Short hair

Short hair really is low maintenance and can be just as sensational and cute as long hair. For example, hair can be tapered at the sides and swept back, and the top of the hair rolled into two or three sections, and using big rollers. Spritz the hair to hold the style. The finished look can then be teased into shape or swept back to create the Keisha Cole vintage finish.

Natural Hair

Micro braids are so versatile, and have the ability to imitate any style with a little creativity. After micro braiding hair, flat twist into a French roll. Secure the bun at the top with pins for a sophisticated look. Use braid spray for a final touch to give it a clean sheen.

Flat iron natural hair for a smooth finish, and cut into a razor bob for this season's new look. This style can be flipped out, curled or sleeked back. Wrap hair at night using a satin scarf to maintain the edges.

Embrace and love African-American hair for what it is; straight, kinky, curly or braided. Shampoo, condition, and trim regularly to keep hair in top condition. Have fun being creative and versatile, because hair really is a girls crowing glory.
