Careers: What to do when burnout hits

" Sing a song " Getting bored while doing a task is definitely something I am experienced with. My first real job was running a portable crusher, breaking up asphalt. It was one of them positions where all I got to do was just stand there and push buttons. Needless to say, I got burned out very quickly doing this at times. I couldn't move around, therefore standing in a position for so long at a time caused boredom to kick in. I tried everything from talking to myself to counting weird objects, but nothing seemed to last for too long. One day, when boredom came over me, a song popped into my head. I let it out, just as loudly as possible. From that point on, random songs would pop into my head. I would sing each one as the day went on.

" Mixing it up " Getting knowledge of other positions also helps. It pays off in the long run for promotion as well. Staying in a position, doing the same thing day after day can become mentally exhausting. While working with the asphalt recycling plant. We would often swap positions. It gave each other a break, and a chance to learn new skills. Like sometimes I would volunteer to do the shoveling. I would do it just to get some psychical exercise, and to further my knowledge about doing shovel work. It is much like when I am writing an article, I like to write poems just to take a break from writing articles. Exploring different areas really keeps me content.

" Rotating " In order to learn new positions, We would often rotate. For example, when lunch time rolled around, the loader operator would swap positions with me. We rotated to keep production going, but I thought it was awesome to experiment with other traits of the job. I would often swap out with the picker, the picker was the guy who picked trash from a screen to keep it clean. I liked this position, but it was something that I could not have done all day long.

" Know your skills " The most important thing over all is, try to have a passion for what your doing. Sometimes people aren't exactly sure what they have a passion for. Much like myself, I have never really had a passion for construction. Once I started learning the traits, an interest sparked in me. It wasn't because I liked it, but it was because the skills came naturally to me. Another words, I wasn't having difficulty in learning the basics. The more frustrating a job is for you, the quicker you are gonna become burnt out. It is gonna get hit in every career a person tries. The easier the knowledge comes to you, the more you are gonna keep your mind set.
