"Choices"

I was sixteen when daddy died.

His bad decision left us alone to cry.

The loneliness smothered the air.

Mama felt this life was unfair.

My brother was lost and full of fear.

I hid away all my pain and tears.

Mama wanted her sorrow to fade.

She popped her pills with her wine and covered the pain.

My brother would stay awake all night.

He watched her sleep and made sure she was alright.

Life has a funny way.

It gives you a choice and takes one away.

Do you go left or do you go right?

The choice that he made took his life that night.

The ones that you love are affected too.

What would life be if he said, "Baby I choose you."?

When faced with a choice and mom had to choose,

My brother and I would always lose.

I watched her slowly slip away.

My brother held on thinking she was ok.

Time went on and days flew by.

High school passed before my eyes.

I met a boy that helped me get away.

Mama begged for me to stay.

Life has a funny way.

It gives you a choice and takes one away.

Do you go left or do you go right?

I made the choice to leave that night.

The ones you love are affected too.

What would life be if I said, "Mama, I choose you."?

Mama met a man and wasn't alone.

He loved my brother and made them a home.

My brother would visit me on the weekends.

There was something wrong but mom, he would defend.

She had us fooled that her drugs were done.

We thought that we had finally won.

He begged her to bring him to me that day.

I did not feel good to drive all that way.

Her eyelids were heavy and her mind not there.

My brother cried, "This isn't fair!".

She gave in to him when he began to weep.

The entire drive she was falling asleep.

Life has a funny way.

It gives you a choice and takes one away.

Do you go left or do you go right?

She made the choice to drive that night.

The ones you love are affected too.

What would life be if she had chose not to?

She dropped him off early that night.

She wasn't herself, she wasn't alright.

"Mom sleep it off before you go."

"I am fine to drive home, I know."

"Give me a call when you get home,

I am going to worry until you ring my phone."

"Mom you know you don't have to leave."

"Just rest on the couch, I am begging you please!"

Hours went by and the phone never rang, she never arrived

I was nineteen when my mama died.

I was pregnant and left with my brother who cried.

She made her choice, I should have known.

She left my brother and me all alone.

Life has a funny way.

It gives you a choice and takes one away.

Do you go left or do you go right?

She made her choice to drive home that night.

The ones that you love are affected too.

Again, what would life be if mama said, "Baby, I choose you?".
