The 2006 season is one game away from conclusion, and it is never too early to look ahead to the 2007 season, and in specific the 2007 fantasy season. Running Back is the most important position in fantasy football, and the first round of fantasy draft is always filled with running backs. Here are my top 5 running backs, along with a few who are on the cusp of making the top 5.
1) LaDanian Tomlinson-In the 2006 season, LT equaled TD, as Tomlinson scored 31 during the season. Unfortunately his success did not lead to success on the field for his team in the playoffs as the Chargers lost to the Patriots in the playoffs. Even with the loss, no matter what, if you have the #1 pick in your fantasy draft next year, go with LT. He won't make you sorry.
2) Larry Johnson-LJ showed that his late season performance in 2005 was no fluke by having another huge season in 2006. He would be the consensus #1 in people's minds because he has all the tools a big game running back needs. The one concern for him is the fact that he broke the NFL record for carries in a season in 2006. The former record holder, Jamal Anderson, had just 19 carries the season after he put up his record number because of injuries. If LJ is the best player on the board when you are picking in your draft, I still think you can still take him with little trepidation.
3) Stephen Jackson-Maybe one of the most underrated backs in the NFL, despite his #3 position on this list. He can run fast, even for a big guy, and he is a great receiver out of the backfield. After being one of the leaders in yards from scrimmage all season, I think you can expect another big year from him next year.
4) Brian Westbrook-Injuries are always a factor with him, but when he is healthy, few backs are more explosive than Westbrook. He is a back who is a threat to get 100 yards every game running or receiving. If you were to take him with the #4 pick in your draft, it might be looked at as somewhat of a risk, but it also could turn out to be quite a reward too.
5) Shaun Alexander-Going into the 2006 season, Alexander was part of the big three along with Tomlinson and Johnson. Unfortunately, Shaun Alexander got struck by the Madden curse and missed mearly half the season with a cracked bone in his foot. By the end of the season, Alexander was running harder, and if his performance in the playoff game against the Bears was a sign of things to come, Alexander may find himself in the top 3 by the end of next year.
A few running backs who could slide into the top 5:
Reggie Bush-a true talent, had almost 90 receptions in the regular season and is a threat to score on any play
Rudi Johnson-Quiet runner who piles up yards and TD's
Frank Gore-Has had surgery on both knees in college, but put up a ton of yards last season
Edgerrin James-Despite the bad year in 2006, still had 1000 yards, may have a better year with new coach and new system
Willie Parker-"Fast Willie" seems to be getting better every year, and will have another big season as the focal point of the Steelers offense
