Poetry: Freedom

by Jim Markley

Created on: February 07, 2009

His blood ran deep, lost in the sand

A child shivering

In the guise of a man

Fear and confusion, just following orders

Doing as he's told

Forced to cross sovereign borders

Older men choosing the time of his death

A means to an end

Till he takes his last breath

Religious evil must be put down

Despite all the blood

That is spilled on the ground

Did Shock and Awe precursor

The Seige of Jaffa?

Did flowering youth ever get very far?

Ascalon fell in the medieval past

Will the fall of Baghdad

Insure peace will last?

Many young souls abruptly detached

Al-Babein lay in ruin

Our future mirrors our past

Proudly they pour through the Karbala Gap

Our hopes and our dreams

Splintered wood, bleeding sap

Crusader blows strengthened by God's might

Iraqi freedom

Today out of sight

Arrogant and intolerant, such leaders need unseated

The pallor of war

Is too often repeated
