with the realities of modern urban life, Prince Edward proves to be more successful than Giselle at navigating through the city. He is accompanied by the queen's servant Nathanial (Timothy Spall of Harry Potter fame) who is there to help but is really under orders from the Queen to keep the prince far from Giselle.
What follows is, sadly, very predictable. Phillip begins to fall for Giselle and rethink his jaded and no-nonsense ways, Nathanial bungles things, Edward wanders around in tights and, finally, evil Queen Narissa makes her appearance and must be defeated. There are a few funny scenes sprinkled throughout, but there wasn't a single surprising or suspenseful (or even really original) moment in the film.
Amy Adams, as Giselle, keeps up a wide-eyed innocent routine throughout most of the movie. For a little while, this is amusing- but it wears thin quickly. She manages to do quite a bit of singing, and has a passable voice, but none of her songs are particularly memorable. There is one absolutely hilarious scene in which Giselle uses her animal controlling powers' to clean Phillip's apartment. Unfortunately, this proves to be just about the only funny scene in the movie.
Enchanted works well for children and grandmothers and people who like to look at pictures of cute kittens. Unfortunately, if you are the kind of person who does not think a talking chipmunk is adorable, you won't find anything worthwhile in this movie. The plot is unoriginal, the story predictable, most of the jokes fall flat, and you will find yourself happy when the movie is over and you can go back to the real world.
