Best online job search engines and how to use them

The first and foremost online job search website that pops into most people's minds is undoubtedly the mother of all internet job search sites: Monster.com. However, other online job search websites are at the job seeker's disposal as well.

This article describes 11 job websites and how job seekers can make them work to their advantage.

Monster

The secret to Monster's success lies not only in its easy to use job search, but also in the wide array of additional features including advice, job tools, customization, resume posting, and resume building tips. Monster's bizarre yet comical horn-nosed beast icon has also proved strategically effective from a marketing perspective. A resume on Monster is a must, as it is the most widely used jobs database by employers.

CareerBuilder

Around since the inception of the internet in the mid-1990s, CareerBuilder features an easy to use search, resume posting, job alerts, job recommendations, and advice. Take advantage of CareerBuilder's skills training, an excellent feature that increases marketability (fees apply).

Craigslist

When landing on the Craigslist home page, click the applicable city, then click the applicable job category under the jobs column.

Thingamajob

Thingamajob offers an easy way to search for a job by state, city, category, or keywords. Use Thingamajob's Career Center to view informative articles on IT careers, resume tips, and career transition and relocation advice.

USAJobs

USAJobs is the official job search website for U.S. Government hiring in all 50 states.

Yahoo! HotJobs

Yahoo! HotJobs is a well-designed, intuitive job search website that features a wealth of career articles, advice, interviewing tips, salary information, and much more. Take advantage of Yahoo! HotJobs' networking feature and resume writing tips.

Indeed

Indeed is probably the simplest job search website on the internet. Simply type the job title in the What field, the location in the Where field, and click the Find Jobs button to begin searching.

Indeed is a metasearch job search engine that searches across other job sites, associations, newspapers, and company career pages. Other metasearch job websites include Juju, SimplyHired, and JobKite.

TheLadders

For experienced executives seeking $100K+ jobs, TheLadders is the premiere website for the job search. For $30 per month or $180 annually, members gain unlimited access to thousands of $100K+ jobs and over 35,000 pre-screened recruiters.

The job seeker will want to post his or her resume to as many of these job search websites as possible. Casting a wider net means a greater chance of getting hired.
