Top things to consider before hiring a contractor

If you are embarking on a home improvement project, the first step is to hire a contractor. Choosing the right person for the job can be tricky, but educating yourself and doing your research in advance can ultimately save you time, money, and headaches. So, what factors should be considered before hiring? Start by checking into at least three different companies, and compare the following elements of each one:

1) Reputation. This is perhaps the most important factor to consider in finding the right contractor. Gather information about each contractor's history and reputation. Utilize remodeling and home improvement social networks, and speak with friends and family members who have had similar work done. Check with the Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been filed against any of the contractors that you are considering.

2) Experience and expertise. Determine how long each company has been in business. Ask the contractor how many years of training, schooling, and personal experience he has. Seek a contractor that specializes in the type of work you are looking to have completed. Choose a remodeling professional that gives solid answers to your questions, and exhibits knowledge of his company's products and services.

3) Licences and Insurance. Request each contractor's business license number, and confirm it with the local licensing office. Make sure the contractor has General Liability insurance, and take the time to contact the insurance company to make sure the policy is active. Hiring a contractor that does not have the required licenses or insurance can be disastrous.

4) References. The contractors should be able to provide you with names and phone numbers of several customers with whom they have done similar work. Contact the clients, and ask them questions about their level of satisfaction with the completed project. Ask them what they did or did not like about the contractor, and if they would recommend hiring him.

5) Price. Although you should never base your decision on price alone, you do want to make sure you can stay within your budget. After you have obtained written estimates, compare the goods and services included in each one, as well as the proposed cost.

Hiring a remodeling professional is a process that should not be rushed into. Take time to gather information and compare several contractors to ensure that you ultimately make an educated decision. You will be glad you did.
