Improving numeracy among adults

by Ry-bot

A preliminary step to improve someone's numeracy is for the teacher to find out the person's level of competency in numbers. Does he/she have knowledge of the basics like the decimal system, place value, and main number operations used in calculation? If so, what about geometry and the higher branches? A sample test having those basics can help with that determination. Then the teacher must figure out the type of method used for instruction, i.e. whether spatial, visual and/or tactile kinds of instruction are suitable. It would help to know about the student's background in such areas as employment, daily activities and hobbies that a teacher could use as the means to connect the role of numbers to the person's daily life. For example, if the student enjoyed sports, the teacher could emphasize how numbers are frequently used to keep scores and tallies in the course of a competition in order to determine a winner or loser. The actual mechanics of keeping score could be explained so as to teach rudimentary number operations. The pupil's other activities can be touched on in this manner. In this way, numeracy can be improved on an individual or group basis.
