Top things to consider before hiring a contractor

Embarking on a home improvement project can be a chore, especially if it is something that is beyond one's limitations or skills. Bringing in a general contractor or specialized contractor to perform the necessary work has its own set of problems as well. But before one hires a contractor, there are a few things to consider.

Budget. Any home improvement project is going to cost money, so it is always a good idea to know one's budget parameters. Just how much are you willing to spend on the necessary remodeling or room addition? Does your budget allow for cost overruns, such as replacing unforeseen damaged flooring or necessary electrical equipment/wiring?

Permits And Codes. Make certain that the remodeling or construction you want done is permitted and what sort of licenses and permits you might need to pass your local building code inspection.

General Contractor or Specialized Contractor? Since you have already decided the job requires more expertise than yours, ascertaining whether the job requires a specialized contractor or a general contractor becomes important. For large projects, a general contractor is usually best. For smaller jobs, a specialized contractor might fit the bill. Interviewing prospective contractors and asking to see examples (photos or videos) of their work will help narrow the search. Unfortunately, the more specialized a contractor is usually means the more they charge for their services.

Time Constraints And Availability. Many home improvement specialists have busy schedules. How quick you want your particular remodeling or addition job completed should be taken into consideration when choosing a remodeling professional or contractor. A contractor with a busy schedule might not be able to begin work on your remodeling for awhile, which could be problematic if there was a reason one might need a quick renovation, such as relocating and having a need to sell one's home. But whatever the reason, finding a contractor whose schedule will mesh with one's own would be ideal.

References. Get as many references as possible. The guy that stopped you in the grocery store and handed you his business card might need the work badly, but if you cannot find anyone willing to vouch for his work, then hiring that contractor and/or his company could be a risk. Referrals can be found on home improvement social networking websites.

Background Checks. A little detective work on one's own can also track down a contractor's history. Calling the Better Business Bureau might net complaints against some contractors. Contacting one's state licensing board to ensure that your prospective contractor is legally qualified to do the work required is also suggested. Another resource would be one's state court system's website to see if a prospective remodeling professional has a history of litigation against them.

A little research and planning can make all the difference between a bad home remodeling experience and a good one when it comes to choosing a contractor. Following this basic guideline should make your experience a bit easier, more worthwhile and, at project's end, far more enjoyable.
