When to use a contractor, and when to DIY

When facing a home improvement project, the first question every homeowner must ask is: Can I do this on my own?' Even the most skilled homeowner may need an experienced contractor for some stages of their project.

Because hiring contractors will increase your overall remodeling cost, it is best to evaluate your skills and your home improvement project requirements as you plan your home improvement project. Ask yourself:

1) Ambition

Are you willing to forego your Saturday golf game - maybe for weeks in a row? Is your family prepared to live in and with the remodeling mess for an extended period of time? How flexible are you and your family?

Remodeling projects take a considerable amount of time. Contractors, of course, work on your home improvement project while you earn a paycheck, take the kids camping, or walk the dog. Homeowners need to ask themselves how much time they are willing to devote to their remodeling project.

2) Adaptability

Can you roll with the punches? Are you willing to deal with unknown challenges? How will you handle the hassles of locating your own sub-contractors, tracking down the needed tools, and finding appropriate materials? Remodeling projects always include glitches, problems, and the unexpected. Thus a homeowner needs to consider their personality.

3) Aptitude

Are you considering a remodeling project well with your comfort zone? While some homeowners can take on a bathroom remodel, lay new flooring, hang dry wall, or replace windows and doors, others find these projects fall outside their current ability level.

If you are unsure what skills are needed for your remodeling project, ask your local remodeling and home improvement social network. You may find you have the skills for the job. However, remodeling professionals can save you time and frustration if you would be getting in over your head.

Furthermore most remodeling projects require some specialized equipment. Do you have the necessary tools? Does your local rental store offer them at a reasonable rate? If you must purchase tools, consider their long-term value. Will you ever use them again?

A homeowner is wise to assess these areas carefully before deciding whether to hire remodeling professionals or tackle the job on their own. Before making the final decision, compare prices, consider your options, and carefully evaluate your skills and abilities. In the end, this will make the difference between a quality remodeling project and a headache.
