Great children's books about the Bible

As a mother, I am always looking for books to read that are Scripturally accurate and fun to read. Many books from a variety of publishers are available.

A number of the VeggieTales storybooks, from Big Idea and Zonderkidz, are true to Scripture and enjoyable reading. "The Ballad of Little Joe" is one of my personal favorites in both book and video format - the story of Joseph, told as a Western. However, my favorite VeggieTales book is actually more of an overview of Acts and Corinthians than a Bible story. It is called "Larry Lights the Way" and teaches a lesson adults can learn from too. In this book, Larry and his friends learn how to use their gifts and talents to help each other. My personal nickname for this book is "The Open Church for Children", because it illustrates the open church concept popularized by James Rutz.

I would also commend the VeggieTales Bible Dictionary as one of the greatest sources of alphabetically indexed Bible facts for kids (and great VeggieTales trivia snippets). Big Idea, a pioneer in 3-D animation, also ensures each page carries one or more trademark character illustrations.

Four of my favorite books of Bible stories are "Little Boys Bible Storybook", in two editions, "... for Mothers & Sons" and "... for Fathers & Sons", and "Little Girls Bible Storybook for Mothers & Daughters" and "... for Fathers & Daughters", by Caron Turk. These contain 50 detailed stories each, they are true to Scripture, and they are told in a down-to-earth, cheeky style that my children really enjoy.

Some lesser-known books that are enjoyable and accurate are from the Me Too Books series published by Roper Press. My children love these books! They are still in print, but the only place I seem to be able to find them is on the internet or in thrift stores. Kids love them because they are written playfully; and I love them because they tell lesser-known Bible stories well, and they are written in a captivating format that allows younger children to interact with the books. Excellent titles include "Nobody Knew But God!" (Moses, Miriam, and Pharaoh's daughter), and "Don't Rock the Boat" (the miraculous catch of fish).

Arch Books publishes stories from the whole Bible in the form of poem books. This makes them easy-to-read and memorable - I remember these books from my own childhood! Since Arch is a longterm publisher, some of their titles are hard to find; they are written for ages 5-9. Some of my favorites are "The Springy, Slingy Sling",
