Quality contractors are key to a successfully completed home improvement or remodeling project. The homeowner needs to ask the pertinent questions and cover all their bases before making their final hiring decision. Keep these things in mind as you review potential contractors for your home improvement or remodeling project.
A) Character
Character is key, especially in the remodeling professionals who will be working in and around your home. Check with your local remodeling and home improvement network - friends, family, neighbors, local building supply stores, and local building inspectors. What is their general opinion? In addition to input from your local remodeling and home improvement social network, ask some specific questions:
*Do they pay bills on time?
*Are they easy to work with?
*Do they take charge of the construction site or leave it to someone else?
*Are they well thought of by local sub-contractors?
*Do they communicate well?
*Are they well-respected?
B) Qualifications
Do not make your final decision based on your feelings. The right contractor for your remodeling project will be well qualified. The cheapest contractors may be hungry for work. The most expensive remodeling professionals may be over booked.
Consult with your local licensing board. Make sure your prospective contractor's license is valid. Check with the local court system and the Better Business Bureau for court cases or unresolved complaints. Make sure your contractor of choice is:
*Licensed
*Bonded
*Insured
C) Dependability
Talk to previous customers.
*Were they satisfied?
*Was a quality product produced in a timely manner?
*Did the work crew interact properly with the homeowner?
*How did the contractor resolve issues?
*Was the contractor approachable when problems arose?
*How important was a specific completion date (barring unforeseen and uncontrollable delays)?
*Who was responsible for site safety and clean up?
*Was the homeowner's property respected by both the contractor and the employees?
D) Experience
*Do your potential remodeling professionals have expertise in your particular remodeling project?
*If you are hiring general contractors, are they experienced in your particular area of need?
Most places issue separate licenses to general construction, plumbing, and electrical contractors. Be sure your contractor is licensed for your project.
Hiring a qualified and dependable contractor will be make your home improvement project flow smoothly. Doing your advance research and asking the right questions will pay big dividends in the end.
