When embarking on a home improvement project, choosing a contractor is perhaps the most important decision you will make. Select the wrong person for the job, and your dream can quickly turn into a nightmare. So how can you ensure that your project will go smoothly, and that you will be satisfied with the results? Take the following steps to improve your chances of finding the right contractor for your remodeling needs.

1) Plan ahead. Before you begin your search for the perfect contractor, establish a detailed plan for the renovation. Prepare sketches, designs, layouts, and pictures ahead of time to form a general idea of how you want the completed project to look. Create a list of questions to ask the contractor during the interviewing process. Adequate preparation will allow you to communicate your visions effectively with the contractor, and could ultimately save you time and money.

2) Research. Compile a list of potential contractors in your area, and gather information on each one. Utilize remodeling and home improvement social networks on-line, as well as experiences of friends, family members, or co-workers. Check with the Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been filed against any of the contractors on your list.

3) Interview. Schedule a meeting with each potential contractor to discuss the details of the project. Explain your expectations for the renovation, and review your plans and ideas. Ask questions, and take notes while speaking to the contractor. By the end of the interview, you should have solid answers to the following questions:

• How much experience does the contractor have?

• Can they provide references from previous projects?

• What type of warranty is offered?

• Is the contractor licensed with a General Liability policy?

• How long will it take to complete the project?

4) Obtain and compare quotes. Once you have completed the interviewing process, it's time to request written estimates. It is best to obtain quotes from at least 3 different contractors. When making your final choice, don't base your decision solely on price. Take your time, and review all aspects of each potential contractor. Choose a remodeling professional with experience, expertise, and a solid reputation.

Remember, the contractor you choose can make or break your remodeling project. It is crucial to be proactive in the selection process and invest some time and energy into your decision. After all, being confident that you made the right choice is priceless!
