Songs: Thoughts of spring

by L. Merlino

Created on: February 06, 2009

Dusky, musky, heady scents
that draw me to the garden
where earth begins a declaration
of independence
from winter's scorn

There I find myself
on the brink of eternity
one garden
one mind
one nature

then something more delicate
rises to note
a single soprano vibration
above the dank earth
one flower bud arrives on the scene
releasing its mirth

Yet all else is still baritone
sound of sleepy mulch and loam
home of the gnome ...
I thought I heard a leprechaun
And then again it's just the earth
awakening from slumber.

But a chorus is waiting in the wings ...
of newborn sprouts dreaming to sing
a few more days and then they'll chime
more buds, then blossoms
and fragrance sublime.

on the brink of infinity ...
different gardens
different minds
a symphony diverse in nature

People are a lot like that
hibernating till the last moment.
Then one rises up to the occasion
perhaps still a bud
But before long, humanity chimes in
to the high note
of one who would rise above the stubborn somnambulism
of winter's grip.
