How to find the perfect contractor

Find the perfect contractor for your home improvement projects, and you will have struck gold. Nobody wants to be overcharged for haphazard work, especially when so many remodeling professionals will be unwilling to fix their mistakes. It's not rare for contractors to completely refuse contact with dissatisfied homeowners. Fortunately for your home and your wallet, there are reliable remodeling professionals out there. You can find the perfect contractor.

Referrals from Friends

Most people don't have massive a home improvement social network. This means friends are often the ones suggesting you hire certain contractors. Red flag! Unless those friends are home improvement professionals, think twice before hiring the same people they did. Sometimes home remodels only look gorgeous on the outside, but looks can't tell you whether the job was done right. You need an expert to verify which contractors offer quality work, both inside and out.

Where to Look

Nobody can find the perfect contractor without knowing where to look. You might have seen advertisements in the phone book, found them in your mailbox, or even noticed them on flyers stapled to telephone poles. Unless you really want to experience a remodeling disaster, forget you even saw these. Contact architects and engineers who've worked with different contractors and ask them who did the best job. You can also head to your local hardware store and see if they can refer dependable contractors.

In-Depth Research

After you've found at least three promising prospects, start doing some serious research. Call at least six people for whom each contractor has done remodels. It might be a hassle, but ask if anyone would allow you into their home or business. Physical examples of someone's work could make or break your decision. Keep in mind that if you need your bathroom remodeled, your contractor should have remodeled bathrooms before, and also keep a list of contractors who are definitely not worth hiring.

Everything In Writing

Your contractor absolutely needs to have Worker's Compensation and General Liability insurance. Do not accept anything less than proof from the carrier. Contact the company directly and request a Certificate of Insurance. As soon as you receive the certificate, discuss every detail about your home improvement project with the contractor. Professionals need to know exactly what you want done; changes in the middle of a project can be extremely costly. If the contractor you chose has no interest in these crucial details, save yourself the hassle and hire someone else.
