Whether you have a small home-based business or you operate on a global scale, networking can be one of the biggest keys to your long-term success. You may be "networking" and not even realize it. It can be done in a direct deliberate way or mixed in during social functions.
Most newer business owners put the word out by talking with friends and family first and then branching out. You shouldn't feel like you are putting the bite on these people and you won't if you approach it properly. Merely let them know that if they know of anyone who may be interested in your services, to put that party in touch with them. Sometimes that friend of a friend can become a great customer or even the start of a great network of undiscovered clients.
Joining clubs, service groups, and local chamber of commerce organizations can help you to meet new people. Again, relationships formed which directly result in sales may take time but it is worth it in the long run.
In today's information-based economy, it's hard not to think of having a website which tells people what you are all about. You can reach millions of potential customers and even create some new peer relationships as well.
Networking is most certainly a key ingredient in any successful business plan. The extent and methods you employ depend on the type of business and your goals.
