When buying compilation albums, it is important to know what you are looking for and what you aren't looking for. In the end it will save you both time and money. The advertising and packaging of the CD are designed to be eye catching at first, but many times wind up not offering a collection that will be worthy to hold on to.
A rule of thumb is to try and remember which kinds of music hits(either based on decades, styles, or rarities) you want to own more of. For example, when buying an 80s compilation, try and purchase one with 12" dance mixes or choose a live album. A different version of the same songs sometimes has a newer interpretation and worth owning. An Acoustic version will sound like a new song based on the eletro laced original version.
If you want to avoid owning the same song/tracks all together, list the songs that you rather own and then purchase them from a cheaper compilation which means that even if you have multiple songs you don't want, you can rest assured that you paid 2.99 and not 17.99. The competition of record companies to get new "old" best seller tracks on the charts will sometimes have forgotten they have several competitive lower-priced collections already available. When all else fails, you can find a great list of songs in the bargain bins. No need to spend when you don't have to.
Higher priced and good quality releases of favorites (ie-the sound quality) are essential as well to update your collection. Sometimes the "same old songs" are actually so old, they won't play anymore. Replace a few CDs with remasters and your good to go.
Buy a compilation because you need it or have to, not because its a new release with nice artwork. You'll only be collecting another album you'll never need to listen to.
