How to generate traffic to your blog

When looking at how to generate traffic to your blog, you have to look at it from two very different perspectives. You have to consider the issue both from what actually appears on and within your blog and external measures for creating awareness of and traffic to your blog.

The first step is to make sure that we have our blog set up and designed in the most search engine friendly fashion. We have to include good, relevant tags on it. Consider how you think people may input a search to Google which would lead them to your blog. Think of words and small phrases that you would use and as these as tags to each post.

We have to include relevant outward links on our blog. This both pleases our visitors as it gives them easier access to more information on the subject and thus means they are more likely to return at a later date and it pleases the search engine spiders which will crawl your blog for very similar reasons.

We have to make sure that the content on our blog is of good quality. Are we providing our visitors with the information which they are likely to require? Is our sentence and paragraph structure correct? What about our grammar and punctuation? If your blog falls short of requirements in any of these areas it is likely to fail to impress your visitors and even irritate them. That is not a good way to securing regular readership.

We have to post regularly to our blogs. Fresh, quality content on a frequent basis is a fantastic way to make blogs "sticky," as visitors who are genuinely interested in your topic will see that you regularly add more information on your subject and will very probably visit again.

Just as outbound links from our blog are important, so are inbound ones from elsewhere on the Web. This is one of the most important ways of securing regular traffic. Visits from lots of different sites also improves your standing with the search engines as it clearly makes your blog look popular.

Join all the major social networking sites if you are not already a member. Post a link to your blog on your profile and chat about it in group forums or chat rooms. Place a link with bookmarking sites and blog directories. If you have any other blogs, link them all together. Include a link on any relevant websites which you own or administer. Join forums relevant to your topic and see if you can find ways to link from posts on them to your blog. Brainstorm this issue and see how many different ways you can come up with of obtaining inbound links in this fashion - but remember never to spam!

We should also visit other blogs and websites relevant to our subject. Leave a constructive comment on the blog and there is a good chance that the blog's owner and others reading it may in turn visit your blog. E-mail the owners of such blogs and ask them what they think about the possibility of a link exchange - the worst they can do is say no. Ask any of your friends or colleagues about linking to your blog, either as a favour or as a link exchange.

By following all of these steps we can certainly improve our blog's chances of increased traffic. Always be on the look-out for more ideas, however. Get in to the habit of carrying a notepad and pen around with you at all times as ideas can strike without warning at the strangest times. Hopefully, your trickle of traffic will soon become fully fledged gridlock.
