If you are looking around for home projects to tackle, why not consider remodeling or improving your home. Large wholesale-retail stores cater to those seeking materials and fixtures for remodeling and home improvement can range from new carpet, or wall coverings to landscaping.
The big question is, when should you do it yourself and when should you hire a contractor. You should begin with a solid idea of what you want and then do some research to discover what it entails. For example. You have two small bedrooms and would like to combine them and add a bath. First of all, you must determine whether the wall you want to remove is a weight-bearing wall. If it is, it must be replaced by a beam, and that beam will have to be supported at both ends of it span. There is also a matter of wiring in the wall, where will that go and how do get the wall down without creating a major disaster. But does that mean you should just hire a contractor or remodeling professional? Not necessarily.
Take the time to research your home improvement or remodeling project. Check out the home improvement social network on the web and gather a few brochures from your local home improvement outlet. Go to the library and get a book on the techniques and materials for your projects and learn all you can before you start.
Start small if you're not a real handyman. Decks are fairly easy, with your most valuable tools being a square, a level and plumb string. It is also easier to use a screw gun than hammer and nails when building a deck. Another easy do-it-yourself project is replacing overhead lights with fans. Remember to turn all the electricity off for that circuit before attempting any electrical project.
If you have the skill and confidence to take on a home improvement project yourself, arm yourself with the information available at your supplier and go to it. Books are available on do it yourself plumbing, rewiring, and construction. Remember, however, that many improvement and remodeling projects require permits or licenses and some should be inspected by a remodeling professional or contractor when completed.
