Overview:
Costa Rica is a one-of-a-kind extraordinary tropical and ecological experience. Well-known for its uniqueness and idiosyncrasies, Costa Rica means Rich Coast in Spanish. And a lot of coastline is does have, approximately 1441 miles of Pacific coast to the West and Caribbean coastline on the Eastern side. It has both black and white sand beaches. This country boasts jungles, rain forests, coffee plantations, volcanoes, and rich culture and tons of exclusive bio-diverse places to visit. There's no shortage of things to do like visit the beach, kayak the numerous rivers, walk or trek through the forests, try out a swing bridge or two, go horseback riding in the mountains and much, much more. For sure, one visit is not nearly enough.
Ancient history:
Costa Rica was founded by Christopher Columbus in 1502. He and his explorers encountered only about 20,000 indigenous and tribal inhabitants at that time. The country was isolated geographically from the Spanish stronghold and central government in Guatemalan City and enjoyed more freedom and autonomy in this way. The one major Indigenous archeological city is located at Guayabo. Gold, Jade and other artifacts have been unearthed. Costa Rica was a rural democracy early on, but still celebrates the Central American Independence Day from Spain on September 15.
Modern history:
The country had its first democratic election in 1953 and has experienced great periods of peace and political stability. The nation is proud to have had more than a century of democratic tradition and has been military free for over half a century. It enjoys a government with little political corruption and intervention. The government and people share a common goal of creating and preserving an eco-friendly paradise to attract people from all over the world. San Jose, the nation's capitol has many impressive museums with intriguing historical treasures and also has a compelling National Theater with cultural plays and music year round. Democracy and peace are the backbone of this culturally adept country, Costa Rica.
Culture:
Coastal living mixed with a slow-paced rural setting makes for a laid-back and carefree lifestyle in Costa Rica. The people of Costa Rica are a good mix of Mestizo, Spanish, Indigenous, Afro-Caribbean and a few ex-patriots. The larger cities possess the big-city atmosphere craved by some, complete with upscale and chic restaurants, shopping malls and lavish night clubs. The population is well educated, has a 96% literacy
