Quick and Easy Crocheted Rug Patterns

If you like crochet, you're going to love all the things you can with little to no out of pocket cost, and a limited amount of time. One of these things is making a rug. Crocheted rugs are easily made from left over fabric, old twine and rope, and even worn out towels. Of course, you can also purchase new materials to make crocheted rugs. Either way, they are fun and easy to make.

Gathering Materials

The first thing you need to do is collect the materials you want to use. If you are using fabric, cut it into one 2 inch strips. If you are using yarn, twine or rope, decide how thick you want it, being sure to put two or more strands together if necessary. You will also need a large crochet hook. They come in many sizes. I recommend size N or Q.

Beginning a Rectangular Crocheted Rug

Make a foundation chain that is about 3 feet long. If you are using fabric strips, you will need to create a 2 inch overlap of pieces, and hold them together until securely woven into the rug. Once you have made your foundation chain, single crochet in the second chain from the hook, and all the way to the opposite end.

If you are using yarn, twine or rope, it is important to keep all strands even, tying ends together when necessary. I prefer to keep my tied ends to the back of my work, tucking them in and crocheting over them as I work.

Beginning a Circular Crocheted Rug

Make a foundation chain of 6 to 12 chains. Join the last chain to the first chain with a slip stitch, forming a circle. Chain three, and double crochet in the circle with the desired number of stitches for your pattern. If you prefer to use single crochet for your first round, only chain one after forming your circle.

Overlap fabric pieces to join them together, just like you would for a rectangular rug. It's a little more difficult when beginning a circle, so try to make your early fabric strips long enough to avoid joining strips right away.

Creating Your Pattern

Crocheted rugs do not need to be fancy. Using simple stitches like single and double crochet, you can make a beautiful rug. You can create patterns by simply alternating rows of stitches, creating chain spaces for added interest, and making a simple edging to add the final touch to your new rug.

Once you've decided on your stitch pattern, simply follow your design in rows to make your rug. Add the required number of chains at the beginning and ends of rows to keep your work even, and continue crocheting until you have made the size of rug required.

Finishing Your Rug

I recommend washing your rug upon completion. Fabric rugs can be thrown right in the washing machine. You can even use stain remover on them. Rugs made from other materials might need to be hand washed. Once your rug is washed, stretch it out and let it air dry flat on the floor. Adjust the sides where necessary to even out the shape.
