Valentine's Day is the day when we expect love to be in the air- gifts of candy, flowers, jewelry, and other romantic cards are purchased for "The One," our Valentine. We present these tokens of our love and appreciation, with the idea that we are expressing our feelings and if we're honest, in hopes that our Valentine will do the same. Valentine's Day has different meanings for different people, although the basic idea is the same.
The thing is, it's important to remember to keep expectations and plans realistic. For some, it may be simple and sweet- give your sweetheart a rose and a hand-written love note. For others, they may wish to take their sweetie out to dinner, a movie and/or a romantic walk in the park, along with a stunning piece of jewelry.
Everyone wants to know that they're loved, that someone cares, and that someone is thinking of them. That's most likely why Valentine's Day has become such a popular holiday. Setting aside one day out of the year to express love and affection helps people to know they are loved and helps others to remember to express it. Unfortunately, with the fact that Valentine's Day has become so commercialized, many people get their hopes and expectations up.
So how do you have a happy Valentine's Day? How do you make sure your loved ones have a happy Valentine's Day?
Remember that it's the thought that counts. And remember that Valentine's Day should be every day, not just one day out of the year. Don't stress or fret if you can't spend a lot of money on Valentine's Day gifts and cards, sometimes a handwritten love letter is more meaningful and more appreciated than an expensive box of chocolates or a dozen roses. While those things are nice, romantic gifts- a love letter is more meaningful and is a very personal expression of love. And a love letter doesn't cost anything besides the time it takes to write it.
Adjust your expectations. If you aren't expecting lavish or expensive gifts or tokens of love from your Valentine, then you aren't as likely to be disappointed. Remembering that Valentine's Day should be more about the thought and expression of love rather than things or gifts, will help keep your Valentine's Day happy. Realizing that each person has their own Love Language, and their own way of expressing love may help to keep disappointment at bay if your loved one gives you something that isn't quite what you expect.
Give from the heart, not your wallet. Don't expect a wonderful response simply because you spend a lot of money on a gift for your Valentine. Try to remember that not everyone views gifts the same way, and to some, a simple love note or letter is going to mean more to them than a dozen roses, a diamond ring or a big box of chocolate. Take time to learn your loved one's Love Language- and try to give a gift accordingly. You just might be pleasantly surprised if you write your loved one a loved note and take them somewhere special for dinner, or even cook them dinner.
Remember that Valentine's Day isn't about gifts. Valentine's Day has been commercialized to the point that the focus is one gifts as an expression of love. And of course, Valentine's Day only comes once a year, so many people tend to over-spend and focus on what they're buying for their loved ones or finding the "perfect" card. Instead, focus on your love for your Valentine, and try to show your love for them on days besides Valentine's Day.
You don't have to spend a fortune, take a lot of time or major effort to have a happy Valentine's Day. Simply do something nice and simple that expresses your love for your loved one(s) and don't expect the "perfect" Valentine's Day. You and your Valentine might find that what you both originally thought would be the "perfect" Valentine's Day, simply isn't what turned out to be perfect for you.
Find ways to express your love for each other throughout the year, make a tiny extra bit of effort on Valentine's Day, and then revel in knowing that you have done your best to show your love for your Valentine and vice versa. Enjoy love, the relationships with those you love, and remember that, while Valentine's Day is a special day- it truly is, simply another day. And another chance to express your love for one another.
Revel in your love for your special Valentine and their love for you, don't get stressed if things don't go exactly as planned or if you don't have all the money you need to do what you wanted. Be creative, remember that it's as simple as expressing your love for the other person. And remember to be flexible in plans, gifts, and other tokens of love on Valentine's Day. It's the day for love, not stress or unrealistic plans.
