Tips for managing the dreaded eating alone experience

Ask yourself this question; why is eating alone always referred to as being a "dreaded" experience? Are we not now in the 21st century where independence and confidence in ourselves is essential? Society seems to put this fear into people that somehow it is not acceptable to go out to a nice restaurant or even a local caf without some company. Even worse is that those who do decide to dare go out alone feel it's necessary to hide themselves in a book or magazine or engage in a cell phone conversation. Here is another question you should ask yourself; is eating out with someone always enjoyable? Have you ever sat at a table across from someone and secretly wished to yourself that you were alone? Hasn't everyone experienced the awkwardness of forced conversation over a meal that one is too distracted to fully enjoy? The opportunity to have time to oneself to enjoy a good meal should be something people look at with envy. So many of us in this hectic world never take the time to really just sit with our thoughts and cherish aloneness. With the food business being what it is today and there being so many wonderful restaurants seemingly everywhere in this beautiful country, it seems it would be a shame to not treat yourself with a nice meal any time you had the chance, even if that means eating alone. Another thought; isn't people watching one of the most entertaining things one can do? Two people on a first date in a nice restaurant provides so much more entertainment that any book or magazine could offer. My advice to all those scared of a meal alone is this; suck up your fear, pick a great spot you know you'll enjoy and do so with confidence. After all, what are we but individuals in this world?
