Valentine's Day: Gift ideas for your deployed soldier

Write him good old fashioned love-letter. In a world riddled with communication technology that allows instant contact around the globe a few words penned onto paper will speak more loudly than just about anything else.

First you need to find the right paper I and don't mean just grabbing a piece of laser-quality letter size from the office printer. The paper you choose will be part of the message you send. There is a good reason why legal firms use good quality, high density paper - a heavier page carries authority. Are your words lightweight, or do you want the very substance of the page to carry the strength of your feeling?

Typical office paper weights 80 gsm/20lbs. You should be looking for a paper which is at least 110gsm/30lb. Beyond the heaviness of the paper you need to consider the texture. Do you want it to be evocative of a gentle touch, silky and sensuous? Or would he better appreciate something stronger at his fingertips? The texture is not a comment on his masculinity; it's an echo of your physical relationship. Your hand will rest on the paper; so will his. What do you want him to feel?

Then there's color. This is highly personal, and may well be affected by the textures that you are looking for. Pink is clearly very feminine, but there as many shades of pink as there are of femininity, and you may want another color altogether. Color talks about character - bold and brash; pastel and quiet. Think about he will interpret the color, and perhaps briefly contemplate the reaction of his buddies as he pulls the florescent pink sheets from the envelope in front of them. But don't worry too much about their reaction - they might mock him for his lover's enthusiasm, but how does it measure up against what they received?

Having chosen the paper, you now need to find a writing implement. Don't for a moment consider printing on it - you might as well just send an email and be done with it. No, this letter is very personal and it needs to be written by hand using a quality ink pen. Attention to detail contains its own message.

Finally we get to the content of the letter. This is in your hands entirely (and literally). It's your Valentine's message to him so it needs to be your words and your thoughts. Whether you fill one page or many is your choice; is he the sort of guy who will sit and read for a while? Perhaps make it just a little longer than he might normally be comfortable reading, to keep his attention. Or perhaps a little shorter, to leave him wanting
