Poetry analysis: A look at the theme of nature in the poetry of EE Cummings
Analyzing the reasoning's or the content of a poem is a personal impression. Different with each person, depending on what mood, what day, or hour of the day it is; I have to admit, it doesn't matter what time of the day you read ee cummings, his ideas come through very clear.
EE Cummings weaved nature into his poems; below are just excerpts of his poetry.
"being to timelessness as it's to time
being to timelessness as it's to time,
love did no more begin than love will end:
where nothing is to breathe to stroll to swim
love is the air the ocean and the land"
~ee cummings
In, "being to timelessness as it's to time," EE Cummings used movement with time, and love to ocean and land. "breathe to stroll to swim" physical connections to himself and this world of senses, is very evident here, as well, as in all of his poem.
In, "i have found what you are like" birds, flowers, wind, woods, birds and the physical kiss.
"Who feathers frightened fields
with the superior dust-of-sleep. wields
easily the pale club of the wind
and swirled justly souls of flower strike"
~ee cummings
EE Cummings pulled into his poetry the sinuousness of touch, "i like my body when it is with your body."
"it is at moments after i have dreamed" the personal place of a dream, describing the woman of his dreams. Ending with, "turning from the tremendous lie of sleep i watch the roses of the day grow deep."
This entire poem is connected to nature and sex. Neither can be ripped from the other. Sex is nature. Need I say more?
From his sexual thoughts to watching the roses, which still brings him back to a woman's body. Ending with," the day grow deep."
EE. Cummings slips into his body easily. He moves into his surroundings. He pulls us in with his sensual words. Running with the birds and the bees; complementing nature at its best.
Reading EE Cummings has a feel of looking where you shouldn't be. He touches on your heart, make you laugh, feel and he tries to shock. "the boys i mean are not refined."
I end with the title and the last two sentences from;
"it may not always be so;and i say"
"Then shall i turn my face, and hear one bird
sing terribly afar in the lost lands."
~ee cummings
