Morning Coffee

Each day would start

With a fresh brewed pot of coffee

As the kids stumbled out of their rooms

My wife would always act surprised

As I waited with her favorite mug filled

With steaming coffee for her to open her eyes

Our day always starts with

A kiss and laughter

Shared with our morning coffee

Slipping into her running shoes,

With the dog in tow

She headed out the door

As always the dog was first to return

When I opened the door, she wasn't there

Her second cup of coffee grew cold in my hands

As the policeman tried to explain

I refused to listen

And raced down the street

I kneeled where she had died

She had only made it as far as the corner

When a car veered out of control

That driver was covered

In his morning coffee

He was trying to drink, as he raced to work

A day can start so easily

With a cup of fresh brewed coffee

For one with laughter, kisses and hugs

Another in rush

Took away my love

Forever

My tears have never left me

My heart holds a pain

That never heals

Years have passed, still each morning

I take her a steaming cup of coffee

In her favorite cup and set it at her bedside

I sit on her side of the bed, drinking my morning coffee

As hers grows cold

I tell the empty room my day
