January is the beginning of the new semester and anxiety has settled in. Society in recent years has made great changes making it easier for the older adult to attend. It can be rewarding and yet difficult too. Its possible and even encouraged whether it is for the first time or to finish a earlier degree.
Special planning is needed to blend school, work and home. Most colleges offer classes at night or part time. The key to success is to be part time, with either work or school. I have also been told it is not wise to take sociology and psychology in the same semester; as one can become confused keeping certain theories separate.

I have come to the conclusion if your class load is going to be heavy, the home cooked meals become light. Lunchtime at work becomes the perfect time for reading chapter three. Being older can have its drawbacks in class time. It depends on how one looks at it. Some believe being around younger people speeds up your own energy level, even making you feel young. Using the mind increases your ability to retain life in general. Having all ages in a class also brings views from different generations resulting in informative discussions. It is getting easier.

One might think the younger ones would steer away from us older students but this is not the case. They seem to accept the older students well and befriend them easily. You might not be invited to the toga parties, or the sororities but you're not an outcast either.

My advice to others as was given to me: When deciding which type of school to attend, career college, university or Tech College it depends on you and your desires. If returning to complete your master's degree your choices are more limited. If you need to join the work force soon, then a career college might be better. If you have decided on a service career a tech college is your answer; however a junior college could offer classes in accounting or business if you plan to operate your own business.

There are many extra fun activities on the campuses for the older student. Most clubs as in the literary area are most inviting along with health and fitness groups. Drama and school spirit welcome most anyone willing to participate. Universities often have a student information center, which can guide you to different activities pertaining to your interest or career choice.
