Morning Coffee (Blues variation)

Woke up this morning lying face down on the floor,

I had a raging thirst I just couldn't ignore.

My head was all in a haze, my room in a mess,

Yeah, I'd been through one hell of a night, more or less.

There was an empty bottle tucked tight in my hand,

Yeah, my left hand, my drinking hand. I tried to stand,

But stumbled a bit - you know, when you're just waking,

Your knees are shaking, body swaying, head aching.

I got to my feet, dropped the bottle on the floor,

Took a breath, staggered over to the kitchen door.

Turned on the light, adjusted my eyes, looked about,

I knew what I needed, there wasn't any doubt.

See, when you got that thirst, that other kind of thirst,

You know what Im talking about - that morning thirst,

That non alcohol thirst - you need that other swill,

Yeah, that's right, you need that good morning coffee fill.

O.J. won't do, and tea won't ever satisfy,

Water is too weak, and milk - I won't even try.

It's got to be coffee, brewed strong and black,

Morning coffee, just the thing to get my groove back.

Gimme coffee in the morning to clear my head,

Gimme coffee in the morning or I'm just dead.

Morning coffee to make it through another day,

Morning coffee to fake it, all I do and say.

And when I get home at night, and need a stiff drink,

I'll pour a shot or two, as a start, and I'll think

Yeah - beer, scotch, whiskey, throw it all into the mix,

Cause come dawn, I'll get me that morning coffee fix.
