Resuming or starting your college education after years spent in the work world or raising a family can provide focus and motivation for success that you didn't have when you were of traditional college age. Although colleges typically refer to older adults as "non-traditional" students, older students can enjoy the same benefits of getting a college degree.

Here are some ideas for succeeding as an adult university student:

Get academic advice: Universities have academic counselors, and many have re-entry programs for people returning to college or starting college after establishing a career or raising a family. Although you my have one career goal in mind, you can discover degree programs and career possibilities through academic and career counseling.

Check out financial aid opportunities: If you have financial conerns, federal and private financial aid may be available. Check with your school's financial aid department to learn more. Some employers also offer tuition reimbursement if you're taking courses directly related to your work.

Seek a balance of home, work, and college life: All work and no play may have made Jack a dull boy; achieving a healthy balance between home, work, and your college studies is important to your success. Having the support and encouragement of your family, friends, and employer can take the pain out of those "crunch times" when you have several assignments are due or you're studying for exams.

Enjoy campus activities: Universities typically offer extra-curricular events and activities that may include lectures, presentations, cultural events, and social activities. Although you may feel that your "plate runneth over" with school, home, and work responsibilities, attending university sponsored events can be relaxing and inforamtive.

Diversity at the university: Don't feel self-conscious for being an older student. In fact, you'll probably be surprised to find many non-traditional students in your classes and on campus. A diverse community enriches everyone's learning experience, and the university community. Contribute to classroom discussions and activities; you, your colleagues and professors will be glad you did!

Technology provides today's university students with options for completing classes online and on campus. You can develop a schedule that accommodates your academic goals, your family, and your work.
