A great career could mean many things. It could be that you enjoy what you do and all the work you do. It could also mean that you earn a lot of money and you get rich. For a lot it is a combination of the two. It is true that you can get ahead in life with a great career but it usually means that you have to spend long hours at work away from the family which is driving many families towards being divorce. Family is the most sacred relationships you can have on this earth. Whether you are friends with all your family or not, you all share a bond that should not be broken. Immediate family should be protected the most. They are the ones that are with you through thick and thin. They are the ones that you can come home to and count on to be there for you. And once you are old and retire from your career they are the ones that will still be there. There is nothing worst then loosing your family, but yet it is becoming way to common.
When you spend all your time and effort with your career instead of spending some time with your family you miss out on a lot of important events that can go on in your wife, son, daughter's life and you can never take that back. For a child, specially a small one, it is very sad for them when you aren't present at an important event for them. They feel unloved and forgotten. They feel that they need to do something to gain your attention which can lead to behavior problems and acting out. There is only a short amount of time where you can watch your children grow up and become adults. Once those moments are gone , they are gone and they are not coming back. It is really sad when they look back on their childhoods and they say that their dad or mom where never there. I should know I grew up without a dad and my mom was always working to provide for me and my brother. I can tell you from personal experience that a lot of times I wished that she was there supporting me, cheering me on. I know that she couldn't but that is beside the point. I didn't really spend much time with her except for Sundays when she didn't have to work. We didn't really know each other and I honestly wish that that could have been different.
My message to whoever is reading this is as follow. We all have different situations and different needs. Do not let that come between you and your family because later in life you will regret that. Work long hours if you must but also set aside family time. You and your family will appreciate it, and remember that once a moment is gone, it is gone forever and memories last a lifetime.
