Questioning the efficiency of concert security

by James Weeks

Created on: February 04, 2009

Security, by definition, is the freedom from risk or danger. That should mean, if You are claiming to be a Security Firm, that You are providing a safe and danger free environment for Your Clients. These Clients include Homeowners, Business Owners, and even Concert Attendees. Homeowners expect You (Security) to keep them and their property safe. This means no invasion, personal harm, property damage or theft. Business Owners pay for the same expectations. Concert attendees expect to be protected from violence and theft. Violence, as experienced at the Rolling Stones concert in 1969, and others before and since. Theft, as experienced by Me, when I busted a group of people at a concert strolling around stealing out of womens purses. The Security Industry, mostly comprised of private security companies, is pretty much a scam today, in My opinion. Millions of dollars annually, are wasted by consumers purchasing these services, with the false belief that they and their property are protected by highly trained individuals, capable of offering this protection. I am not speaking of the home alarm monitoring services. Those services are helpful and cost effective, especially when the home or business is unoccupied for the day or night. I am not claiming that ALL Companies in the Security business are ripoffs. Only most of them. I am speaking of the vehicle patrol and foot patrol services for Your home, business and event services such as concerts. I have many previous years experience as an Armed Security Officer. I took that position very seriously. I worked for two prestigous companies that provided excellent training programs for their officers. This included extensive and continuous firearms and physical training. This is not the norm in most instances.

Today, even after the tragedy of September 11, most private security firms are far from what they should be. In most cases, anyone who can walk and fulfill the weak requirements of the state, can be issued a security card and wear a uniform. A little training in some states will also allow them to carry a handgun. That does not mean I would want them to protect Me, My Family, or My home! Security Officers, and the Security Industry as a whole, is not much different than the Fast Food Industry. It is just a job that barely pays the rent for most of the Employees. There is a very high turnover rate. Event security, like concerts, is no different. Warm bodies are hired for low wages to fill a uniform and act like they
