Songs: Longing

by Mary Clark

Created on: February 03, 2009

How many years has it been
since we kissed and said goodbye?
Did you ever think back then
one day we'd up and question why

we fought so damn hard
to claim these separate worlds
so far from the love we once knew.

Now when I let down my guard
sift through the ashes that remain
I still can feel the pain of losing you.

But I know,
though my heart might disagree
I'm where I'm supposed to be.
Left to wonder why
we ever dared deny
the love others said would never disappear
yet here I stand without you standing near.

Can you imagine my surprise
when your voice came across the phone?
It took years for you to realize
you didn't want to be alone.

I fought so damn hard
to forget those shattered dreams
afraid to risk another broken heart

When you let down your guard
embrace the pain of every shard
then tell me you still want a brand new start.

One day you may know
though your heart might disagree
you're where you're supposed to be.
Left to wonder why
we ever dared deny
the love others said would never disappear
and there you stand without me standing near.
