Let's start with the end in mind related to the essay's title: The primary role of the manager is to contribute toward the overall profit of the organization by successfully completely the business objectives related to his function. This is a general statement that applies to all levels of management as specifics would be different for senior level, middle management and first line supervisors. As the primary roles has been defined , Iwill devote the remainder of the essay to the skills and strategies that enable success to occur:
* Task completion- Success with tasks is one of the two words associated with successful management. And these tasks what must be accomplished on a daily basis to meet the objectives of the organization and the division. Task completion also includes the daily skills of planning and time management. Effective use of time and avoiding crisis will enable the skillful manager to exceed the objectives within his responsibility.
* People related skills- People is the second word associated with successful management. Managers are not individual contributors but make a contribution that focuses on the performance of the whole team. Here are a few areas of focus at this point: If a manager had ten people in his department and three were downsized, the remaining seven still have the same workload. Thus, the lean and mean environment requires a manager with the skill to cultivate teams that operate with the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. Secondly, effective people managers are senior partners with their associates and are authoritative and not authoritarian. The authoritarian is fixed on title, power and ego; the authoritative manager wants associates who will challenge him and keeps his ego at bay by adopting " what's right and not "who's right".
* Process Skills- As openers, process skills is a combination of task and people skills with consistency and enthusiasm. Consistency is the practice of integrity by matching actions to words. Enthusiasm is the energy of leadership through the practice of focused passion. Edward George Earle Bulwer- Lytton said: " Nothing is so contagious as enthusiasm, it moves stones, it charms brutes. Enthusiasm is the genius of sincerity, and truth accomplishes no victories without it". Lastly, these process skills also includes the role of mentor for the future star. These activities will prepare others for promotion and allow the same for the managing mentor.
Hopefully, there is an idea here of practical value to you!
