Cars these days are all things to all people. For most of us necessity dictates that we have one to get from A to B, and back again. The consideration is budgetary and of course practical and yet even within these tight parameters we almost always want something that looks nice, or cool. Cars elicit a strangely primal response in nearly all of us, the shape and lines are aesthetically pleasing when combined correctly, and psychologically the type of vehicle often matches one's personality. If clothes maketh the man, then it seems the state of a vehicle individuates the driver from the pack, even if it's not always for the right reasons.
Nevertheless, within the pack most of us remain and despite the need to individuate, we generally drive quite similar vehicles: a restriction inherent in the mass manufactured car market. Sure, there are plenty of cool and even pretty cars scattered amidst the millions of vehicles on our roads, but the title of "beautiful" or "best looking", is generally not bestowed upon the rank and file. Such honor is restricted to the upper echelon of the car manufacturing companies; marque's with a deep pedigree of exclusivity, history, impracticality and of course money. So, what then are the best looking cars?
Oddly we need to go back in time to find what is generally argued as one of the best looking cars ever made, the Lamborghini Muira. Released in the mid 1960's and apparently modeled after the highly successful Ford GT40 race car, the Muira was a radical concept and one which earned it instant success. Abandoning much of the styling and engineering conventions of the time, the Muira was a mid-engined two seat sports car. Sitting low to the ground the high and flared wheel arches give the vehicle considerable aesthetic appeal. The doors open conventionally, but featured sculpted and short sweeping points which were designed to mimic the raging bull horns of the cars name sake when fully opened. The V12 4.0 liter engine delivered slightly less than 400 horsepower and this made it one of the most powerful and exotic cars of the period and it sounded like no other as well. It was little wonder that Lamborghini received immediate orders. Even today the vehicles remain popular collective items for enthusiasts. Jamiroquai front man Jay K, a strong supporter of the Lamborghini badge, has a working example in his garage, just like Frank Sinatra before him.
Lamborghini continue to produce some of the best looking vehicles on the road today. Exclusive,
