The diary of a criminal justice student

Criminal justice students are unique in their choice of a degree. You get up each morning looking at the world through the eyes of the professional that you will be when you have received your degree. You see everything about you from the perspective of what should you remember in case you have to answer questions about who, what, where, when, and how. You see details that others don't notice and you make mental notes all your waking hours. You see a world that others miss and know that you have picked the right degree.

Classes aren't taken lightly if this is your career path. You take a full load and work towards a minor in a complementary field. The courses aren't going to be easy. They will require study, review, research, and hands on application. Classes can be taken during the day or for those that must also work, they can be scheduled for evenings and weekends. Most colleges want successful and goal oriented students. They help you schedule your classes around the other parameters of your life.

The best place to start is with access to a student adviser that will be available throughout your course study. Hopefully, they will be a department chair that will have both actual hands on experience in the field before becoming educators. Most advisers will be the person that you can turn to with any questions while finishing your degree. You can schedule appointments to discuss courses and meeting deadlines, testing, and to keep track of your progress. Advisers want you to be a skilled and prepared professional when you receive your diploma.

Most universities have many sources of access to help you with your studies. You can find information at their libraries, on-line help, and counseling. Course study might also require off site visits to courts, police departments, and prisons to see the actual work of those in the criminal justice field.

We are often seen as being a different breed of student. We are. We are the students that will someday be responsible for taking the right action to care for and protect the world that we live in.
