Poetry: The sky

by Jennifer Wells

Created on: February 03, 2009

Invisible, they say,
is the wind to the eye;
yet I see every effect
it has on the sky.

Mistress of moods,
to destroy or to mend
I lapse into daydream
and back out again.

Staring until sleepy
I gaze at thy clouds.
Are the shapes above real?
Are my eyes tricked somehow?

You embrace my emotions,
splash sunshine on my day,
or when storm threatens,
chase my joy fast away.

Still I am electrified
at your splashing raindrops.
I feel vibrant, alive as
each liquid crystal plops.

But sting my flesh with needles
and I turn on you, friend.
You mock me with icy rain,
slashing and pricking at my skin.

Why must you howl down at me
when I your freedom desire?
The yearning to soar in you
is searing my soul like fire.

When you finally get done
covering us with your snow
I'll still be here watching;
I have nowhere else to go.

So put on your winter display;
it seems you feel you must.
I'll continue to search out your secrets
and relish your breeze with lust.

There is no place down here
it is possible to hide
that is not beneath you;
Earth's subtle master, the sky.
