Completing a college degree can be one of the most important steps in your career. The skills you learn, focus you must have, and hard work will almost always pay offeven if you end up on a different path than you first expected. And while some schools do a better job than others at preparing their students for life outside the classroom, there are a few important tips to help any scholar land on their feet after graduation.
Earn a Useful Degree
When it comes to choosing a degree, some are more beneficial than others. It's common for freshmen or even sophomore students not to know exactly what they want to do in life. However, it is often wiser to choose a general area such as Business or Science rather than ending up with a degree in Art History. Also, do not make the mistake of taking a full load of "filler courses" such as yoga and ceramics. There are programs that carry over into most degrees. Investigate which ones these are and be sure to sign up. And by all means, take courses that interest you. Just don't take too many outside what could translate into meaningful employment.
Join Societies
Societies can be a wonderful way to network. This tool could land you your first internship or job. Often times, professionals are invited to speak to groups and offer advice. In this more intimate setting, your chance of meeting someone who has made it in your chosen career path and getting to speak to them personally is much greater. And don't forget to bring your resume! Serious job offers have resulted from such encounters. The financial cost to join a society can be high, but in competitive fields, it is a great way to merge into the "inner circle" and boost a resume.
Get an Internship
While classroom knowledge is important, what really puts job candidates ahead of the competition is to have hands-on experience. Both paid and unpaid internships are wonderful opportunities to learn the ropes while still going to school. Some students even find out the exact position they want to have some day or which they don't. Either way, the learning experience is well worth the time and commitment. And don't wait! Even a high school student or college freshman can land an internship. It's never too early to get a foot in the door. And who knows? The position that puts you in front of the photocopier and has you making coffee runs could eventually lead to heading up a major department or leading a research team.
With a little bit of planning and a lot of forethought, any student can successfully move from the classroom to a full-time career. Preparation is the key. If you know what you want and make the right moves, success is sure to come your way.
