The diary of a business student

I just got back from my one-hour drive. You see I am a business student and I attend the University of Connecticut's School of Business in Hartford, which is a one-hour drive from my house. I could have attended other programs that were closer but they were not business schools. I could have taken my GREs instead of my GMATs. But I chose to attend business school. I have an undergraduate degree in Business Administration and I was looking to grab that coveted Master's degree to help grab myself a bigger slice of the salary pie.

I attended open house in December and from the moment I stepped on the campus I was hooked; I knew this was the place for me. The guest professors were introducing themselves and describing their classes. A marketing professor told us her class was working with Cisco on marketing their telepresence idea. Another professor with disheveled grey hair spouted off statistics examples and how they applied to the business world. I met with a tandem teaching couple whose new class was about internet communication tools such as twitter, Helium, and other blog type sites were relevant in today's business world. When the night was over I knew I'd be in the spring session.

Being a business student is unique because networking is evident everywhere. Other students will stop you and ask who you work for just to make a connection. There are extra activities that are so involved they should be considered part-time jobs. Business students seem to emit success and group play is always encouraged.

At my school a business student can participate in the Student Managed Fund (SMF) where you actually manage a two million dollar portfolio under direct guidance. There is also opportunity to get placed on a team that works with regional businesses to solve projects assigned by them. Every step you take in business school is geared towards making you a better manager.

Management is the name of the game when pursuing your MBA. Business students need to learn time management skills in order to juggle their job, homework, and home life. The majority of students in my classes dress for success and they actively participate in every discussion. Business school is for students who want to learn the secrets of success and how they can transform their lives with these secrets.
