Random acts of kindness often seem unnoticed but they are jewels beyond compare. Little things that some might take for granted sometimes can mean the most, a kind word or just a winning smile can chase the blues away. While on his way to work just the other day, my son noticed a ragged unkempt figure walking slowly along the interstate. It was an icy cold morning and the wind was whipping the frozen ground. For some odd reason he slowed his vehicle down, saying he wasn't sure why but something told him, "Stop!"
Listening to that still small voice, we all hear from time to time, hesitantly my precious son pulled over and stopped. By the time he hit unlock, the figure opened up his door, climbed in beside him and never said a word. Huddled against his door quite to his surprise sat a little old woman with a gleam in her eyes. His fear completely dissipated as he surveyed the withered mass. He smiled at her and tried to make small talk about the weather and the like, still she remained silent for the duration of the ride. He told her where his work place was and that he could take her as far as there. Her response was to simply nod her head showing her agreement.
Throughout the ride to work my son continued to try and talk and put her mind at ease but there were no words forth coming from this stranger he had rescued from the cold. As he pulled up to the intersection he told her, "Right up here is where I work." Gathering her tattered cloak she quietly opened the door and made her way back out into the cold. Just as she was about to close the door, she spoke for the first time. Her words were shocking in their simplicity.
She said, "Son do you believe in angels?"
My son replied, "Yes Ma'am, I do."
She closed the door and walked away without another word. Somewhat in shock my son pulled away looking in his rear view mirror trying to make sure that she was safely away from his vehicle but she was no where in sight. Still in disbelief he turned completely around but the ragged, little old lady was not to be found. As soon as he got to work my phone began to ring. When I picked up my cell phone, I heard my son's shaky voice. Through tears of joy and laughter, he related this story to me. Tears sprang up in my own eyes at the wisdom my son had gleaned from this rather strange experience.
He said, "Mom, I've been riding with an angel but I'm not sure if I was her angel or if maybe she was mine."
