John 8:32 says: And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. Jesus said this to Jews that believed on him. This also applies to believers today.
He said this in the midst of Pharisees that thought he was a sinner who was born due to fornication. They didn't want to listen to him and believe he was who he said he was. He stated the fact that his father was God and they thought he was a liar. They bragged that their father was Abraham. But Jesus told them that their father was the devil.
What really set them off was when he said before Abraham, I am. They picked up stones to stone him. But he shifted out of this dimension and passed through their midst and escaped. When he said I am, this meant that he was God since they all knew that this is how the Jews knew Moses was sent from God because he told Moses to tell them that I am that I am. Jesus said this because it was a fact and the truth.
I like what Harrison Ford said in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade." Archeology is the search for facts. If you're searching for the truth, there are philosophy classes. This isn't exactly what he said. But the idea is correct. There are facts which are sometimes etched in stone, so to speak. 2 + 2 will always equal 4.
Other facts change. A century ago it was a "fact" that the atom could not be split. Less than 40 years later, that fact was disproven. As technology advances, facts are disproven all the time and replaced by other facts which may also be disproven. It used to be a fact that no one could fly beyond the speed of sound and survive. Now scientists say the speed of light is an uncrossable barrier. They may in the future be disproven.
Truth is something that was valid 1000 years ago and will remain valid 1000 years from now. One thing that has always been true is that God loves mankind. He sent his son to die on the cross to give us eternal life. Jesus was the perfect sacrifice for sin. By believing on him and trusting in him, people become children of God. They don't have to wonder if this is true. John wrote in I John 5:13: These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. This is both an unchangeable fact and the truth.
Pilate asked Jesus in John 18:38: What is truth? Jesus had told him in the verse before that he had come into the world to bear witness unto the truth. Everyone that is of the truth hears his voice. God must be worshipped in spirit and in truth, according to John 4:24. God is a Spirit. But to say he is just a spirit would be like saying a hydrogen bomb is just a bomb. He is more than just a spirit. He sustains the universe which he spoke into existence. Without him, this universe would not exist.
Saying God created the universe is a truth believers accept as a fact. But many people refute this fact and say it can't be true. Using the existence of the universe as proof that God created it may not be backed by facts that can be examined in a laboratory environment. But it is a truth believers accept by faith. Accepting the fact that Jesus is the Savior of the world can not get one to Heaven. The demons know that fact and they will never go to Heaven. But if you accept it as truth, you can receive eternal life and a home in Heaven.
Too many people are just interested in the cold logic of facts. What they need to know is the warm assurance of truth. They need to embrace the truth that God offers to all. An atheist is not willing to accept the truth of God because they are only interested in facts. God can't be handled as a fact like ice is a fact that water can become a solid. But God is truth just like the truth that evaporated water becomes clouds. We may not see the water evaporate from the oceans or lakes. But clouds are the evidence that it is true.
In Hebrews 11 we learn that faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. This is also a truth. We can't see faith. The faith Christians have is not blind faith. It is based on the performance of God on the behalf of his people from the time of Adam and into eternity. He is faithful to his people even when it seems he doesn't care. His ways are not our ways and his timetable is not ours. It may be difficult to accept. But once that truth is accepted, God can work in one's life more effectively. Just like we can't see air, but the evidence that it exists is that we are alive. We can't see our home in Heaven. But by faith we accept its existence and that after our life on earth ends we will go there. This was true for Adam and all those that trusted in God and is true for we who are believers.
The Bible is a book of facts and truth. Just because one may not be able to prove things factually doesn't mean they are less true. I may not be able to defend the Bible only on a factual basis. But I can defend it for the truth it reveals. When I embrace the truth, I get closer to God. And indeed, knowing the truth revealed by God through his word has set me free from the penalty of sin which is Hell and eternal separation from God. I am free from the condemnation of God. I am no longer a slave to sin, though at times I commit sins. Jesus will forgive me if I confess my sins to him and I can have close fellowship with him. This is an established truth that will never be false which is very comforting.
