Deciding between an iPod or an MP3

When choosing between purchasing an iPod or a different MP3 player, you should first look at what your needs/wants are. iPods are generally more advanced, higher end devices, with the touch being more than just an MP3 player; it is a web browser, email device, useful tool, and even a game system all wrapped into one. The other iPods, such as shuffle, nano, and even the first gen iPods are basically just like most other MP3 players. As an owner of a first gen iPod touch, I can personally attest to how useful the iPod touch is.

It's also really cool! However, iPods also have several drawbacks, one being price. iPods can be very pricey compared to other MP3 players, but you usually get more for the price in both storage and utility. The battery is also impossible to replace, and although they charge quickly and can hold a charge well, if the battery does die you have to spring for a new iPod. Also, if you are looking into a touch, the screen is delicate and can scratch easily. It also has to be dedicated to a computer and can only operate through iTunes.

Generic or even more common brand name MP3 players have their advantages they are usually cheaper and fairly reliable, and you can replace the batteries. Some might see this as a nuisance, at least if the battery stops working you can just replace it. MP3 players can also just connect to any computer without being dedicated to any machine. They also do not require iTunes to play music, although iTunes can be advantageous in that it makes it easy to purchase music and put them on your iPod.

Let's review the pros and cons again of both the iPods and the other MP3 players: iPod Pros: Last longer, well-made, great storage, awesome apps (iPod touch) Cons: Irreplaceable battery, pricey, requires iTunes, scratch easily (more common with touch) MP3 Pros: Affordable, simple, can work with any computer Cons: Have to buy batteries, often cheaply made, limited functionality In short, it all really matters on what you want. Do you want a well-made device that will last a long time, and may even be more than just a music player even if it comes at a higher price? Or do you want a device that's affordable, convenient, and easy to use at the cost of robustness? iPods can go the distance, but they are pricey. MP3 players are cheap, but aren't as well made. Assess your needs and wants, your price range, and let those guide your decisions further into the purchasing process.
