Actors with the Most Oscars

From 1933 to 1981 Katherine Hepburn won four Oscars for best lead actress. Spanning almost 50 years between the first and last Katherine Hepburn commanded the screen and broke new ground for all other great actress after her, she is not only the actor with the most Oscars, but she is a fierce presence on screen and all her performances deserve a viewing.

At the 6th (1932/33) Academy Awards Katherine Hepburn was the winner in the Best ACTRESS category for Morning Glory' in the role of Eva Lovelace.
At the 40th (1967) Academy Awards Katherine Hepburn was the winner in the Best ACTRESS category for Guess Who's Coming to Dinner' in the role of Christina Drayton.
At the 41st (1968) Academy Awards Katherine Hepburn was the winner in the Best ACTRESS category for The Lion in Winter' in the role of Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine. This was the year that she tied with Barbara Streisand as the winner, Streisand won for Funny Girl' in the role of Fanny Brice.
At the 54th (1981) Academy Awards Katherine Hepburn was the winner in the Best ACTRESS category for On Golden Pond' in the role of Ethel Thayer.

Right behind Katherine Hepburn in the number of wins for a woman is Ingrid Bergman. Three wins spanning over a 30-year period, her wins, films, and the roles she played are listed below.

At the 17th (1944) Academy Awards Ingrid Bergman was the winner in the Best ACTRESS category for Gaslight' in the role of Paula Alquist.
At the 29th (1956) Academy Awards Ingrid Bergman was the winner in the Best ACTRESS category for Anastasia' in the role of Anna Koreff/Anastasia.
At the 47th (1974) Academy Awards Ingrid Bergman was the winner in the Best SUPPORTING ACTRESS category for Murder on the Orient Express' for the role of Greta Ohlsson.

For Leading and Supporting men there are two men who have more Academy Awards than any others. Walter Brennan and Jack Nicholson both have three awards, Brennan has all of his for supporting actor, and Nicholson has two for Actor and one for supporting actor.

Walter Brennan might be best remembered as a television actor, he played on many a television series including The Real McCoys'. He won all of his supporting actor awards within a four year period.
