After many years of going to karaokes, I think that there are 4 types of people that do karaoke. First there is the person with actual talent, someone who can really sing but doesn't have much confidence so they go to karaoke nights to help build their confidence up. Usually they are teenage girls or women in their early twenties who dream of one day singing at Wembley Arena on a sold out tour because they'd just released a multi-selling album. If you look hard enough, you can see the twinkle in their eye and every time they close their eyes, you know they are imagining a crowd of thousands watching her.
The next lot are the ones who can sing but never did anything about following their talent so they go to karaoke to show off their talent and get attention for an evening. These are usually either late twenties or in their thirties. Somewhere down the line, their dreams of being a famous singer got put on the back burner and then they thought it was too late for them to take it up again. They usually end up going on the X-Factor year after year and end up crying because they get told they are too old or left it too long to do anything about a music career.
The third lot are the ones who think they can sing but they really really can't. These are usually the drunk people who have been convinced by their friends is Justin Timberlake's twin brother and can sing will the award winner. Sometimes they don't last through the whole song because they either fall over drunk, passes out or is so drunk they can't see the words anymore. Sometimes, they are people who are completely tone deaf yet think they are Madonna when they get up on stage. They are the ones that do all the dance routines as well because they have stood in front of the tv for hours learning the routines from the music videos.
The last lot are the ones who just want to have fun regardless if they can sing or not. Those are the people I really like, they aren't taking themselves seriously so somehow, they are so much better than everyone else. They have a strange energy that make people want to get up and sing with them because they just don't care. Some have had a few drinks but some are just out for a good time. They even end up grabbing people as they walk past the stage and pull them up to sing with them.
I think that if you took away just one group of these people, it wouldn't be a karaoke night. It just wouldn't be the same without them.
