How to backup your computer data

Be Prepared by Backing Up Your Computer Data

Backing up your data stored on your computer's hard drive is an important part of ensuring that everything you have on your hard drive is safe in the event of a hard drive failure. However many people overlook or forget to regularly back up their data and since hard drive failures can literally happen at any time, many people lose everything they had on their hard drives.

You can prevent the loss of your digital music, pictures, school work, work files, programs, and more by simply backing up your computer data on a regular basis.

How is the best way to backup your computer data?

By far the best and most reliable way to back up your computer data is to combine an external hard drive with a dependable back up software program. The chances of both the external hard drive and the computer's internal hard drive failing at the same time is very slim. By using an external hard drive, you'll have space to store everything on your hard drive and then some.

You should select an external hard drive that can hold at least as much data as your hard drive can hold. That means if you have a 120GB hard drive on your computer, you should purchase an external hard drive with at least that much storage space. There are many makes and models of hard drives, you can easily find one in your price and storage size range. Some come with free or trial versions of back up software.

Once you have your external hard drive, you'll need a good backup software program. Yes you can manually back up your data to the external hard drive, but you may forget certain files or more likely become too busy to remember to do a back up regularly. With backup software, you can set a schedule and your computer data will automatically be backed up regularly as long as the external hard drive is connected.

Some data backup programs will even start up a computer that is off so that a scheduled back up can run. Many of these programs offer a wide range of options, allowing you to automatically back up your entire hard drive or back up only certain files and folders. Some backup software will let you decide if the backup will be a current duplicate of everything on your hard drive at the time of the backup or if you only want to back up new files. Even more advanced backup programs will allow you to automatically replace old files on the external hard drive with the latest revisions of those files (such as a word document you changed or a music playlist you added to).

Many of these programs are available for free online, some trial and limited versions may come pre-installed on certain external hard drives as well.

You can put backing up your computer data on autopilot by purchasing an external hard drive and using backup software that will regularly and accurately back up your data. You'll always be prepared if your hard drive fails, and you won't even have to think twice about it.
