It helps to be famous to start with, but assuming you're not, here's some ideas:
* Pick a subject that interests you. It can be as general or specific as you like. What sort of blogs and websites do you regularly visit? What do you like discussing with people? A focused blog will have more regular readers than a blog where you list great recipes one day and talk about your sick cat the next.
* Post regularly. Some people check blogs while at work, so they'd like new content every weekday. Other people have more time to surf on the weekends. My hits tend to be up on the weekends. So if you're not posting every day, do at least try to post on both weekdays and weekends.
* Use categories. Many blogging systems allow categories or tags. Use them. That will let new visitors find the specific posts they're most interested in reading and returning visitors locate information they remember seeing before.
* Allow comments, but block spam. There's a couple of good spam blockers for blogs out there. People like being able to add to the discussion your post has started, and they'll keep coming back to see if anyone has replied to their comment.
* Use good grammar and spelling. It may be obvious, but many people don't do it. If you know your grammar and spelling isn't up to snuff, then use grammar checkers and spellcheckers. It only takes a few moments more and readers will find your posts more comprehensible and less distracting.
* Don't cover your blog with ads. If you do have ads, make sure they're not large or flashy. Put them in locations where it's obvious they're ads and not part of your blog. Readers don't like being confused.
Most of all, enjoy your blog! If you don't, then who will?
