There is only one thing standing between you and your two week vacation in some sunny, tropical locale, a very long airline flight. The clever traveler knows that this flight will set the tone for the entire trip. A bad experience here will poison the remainder of the stay. But if you get off the plane in high spirits, you'll have a good time, even if you're not going to Aruba, but to a conference about car exhaust systems in Norway in January. Like all elements of travelling, enjoying your flight requires a bit of forethought.
First, plan to be comfortable. This is essential. Due to changes in air pressure, your feet will swell. Do not wear tight shoes. You may loosen you shoes on the plane, but do not remove them as you may not be able to get them back on again. Wear clothing that will be comfortable to sit in for hours on end. This is not the place for tight jeans that cramp bellies and crush more intimate parts. Remember that airplane cabins can get quite chilly, so miniskirts and tank tops are not your best bet, unless they are part of a layering system. A good quality travel pillow is also well worth its weight (and space).
When booking your flight, request seats just behind an exit or bulkhead. This will give you more leg room. It will also mean that you get out first in the event of an emergency an added bonus! Regardless of seat location, stow your carryon so that you have room to move your feet to prevent cramping. During the flight, walk up and down the aisle every hour to prevent cramping and the much more dangerous deep-vein thrombosis, which can be fatal. The recycling of air in the cabin will lead to dehydration, so enjoy the complementary drinks, but also bring your own water bottle. This is especially important if flying to a dry location. You don't want to start your stay in Saudi Arabia already short on water. Especially on really long flights, a snack is always a good idea.
Depending on your plane, your airline, and how much extra you are willing to pay, the movies and other programming supplied by the airline may be the best way to relax and enjoy your flight. The biggest advantage of this is that you don't have to bring anything with you, so you save weight and space. Disadvantages are cost and limited choices, and you will probably need some time-killing equipment later on your trip anyway.
Along the same vein is the use of your own audio-visual distractions. Music players and portable gaming systems are terrific. If travelling with a laptop,
