How to find free and cheap children's activities for weekends

The weekend provides a great opportunity for some family time together. Children of all ages love activities that keep them entertained and busy. Unfortunately many children's activities are cost prohibitive for some families. It is possible to find free or cheap children's activities for the weekend. Here is a list of ways to find some economical, but fun children's activities.

Visit the Museum

Many museums are free to the public. Science museums, art museums and history museums provide hours of educational amusement for children of all ages. Many museums host weekend activities especially designed for kids and their families. Some museums have a monthly newsletter that lists the various activities that will occur on the weekends.
Sign up the museum's newsletter for planning purposes. Another way to find information about children's activities at a museum is to check the museum's online website for their calendar of events if no newsletter is available.

Tour the Firehouse

Most firemen are happy to give a tour of the firehouse to young children. Children love checking out all the hoses, button, and siren on the fire truck. Some fire stations conduct special events on weekends for families. Children can learn general fire safety tips, what to do incase of a house fire and other important facts on these tours. Many fire houses also give coloring books and safety posters to children. Look for information about fire house tours in the local newspaper.

Go Fishing

Check out your local park's lakes or ponds, grab some fishing poles and spend the morning fishing with the kids. Local parks provide lots information about special classes and events geared toward children of all ages. Most parks have a newsletter or website with event information. Rent a row boat, take a jog around the lake or place football in the park for some cheap family fun. The quiet beauty of the park will encourage conversation and provide the opportunity to enjoy nature with your family.

Go to the Movies

Many areas have a discount movie theater that gives a weekend children discounts. Check online or visit your local movie theater for special discounted events on the weekends. Many theaters also have a kid's movie club. The theater charges a one time fee that provides for each child discounted movie tickets, free popcorn and sodas when they present their club card at the theater. Some movie theaters show older movies at a discounted price. Older children enjoy the freedom of attending the movie with their friends on the weekends. Check the discount movie theater's website to view the movie listings.

Play Miniature Golf

Miniature golf is an economical way to have some fun with the entire family. Many miniature golf courses offer discounts for younger children. Teens love competition so divide the family into two teams then let the winning team choose an ice cream shop to visit after the game.

Have a Yard Sale

During the summer, plan a family yard sale one weekend. The whole family can set up tables and make signs. Encourage the children to contribute any items they would like to sell. Your teens can negotiate with customers and handle the money. After the sale, take the money earned and take the family out a special treat.

Family fun need not be expensive. Many children's activities on the weekend are free or cheap. Investigate your area's museums, fire houses, miniature golf courses or have a family yard sale for some creative fun for the whole family.
