Creationism in Public School Science Classes
Public schools should not be allowed to teach creationism alongside evolution as part of their science curriculum. Proponents of teaching creationism in public school science classes would lead you to believe in the "scientific" theory of intelligent design. This however is a heavily coded term for creationism. Their theory basically is that life is far too complex to have arrived from evolution, and an intelligent designer(God) is necessary for our complex world to have unfolded. While they certainly have the right to hold whatever religious beliefs they wish, imposing those religious beliefs on public school children would be a violation of their constitutional rights.
What Happened to the Separtation of Church and State
Actually, the separation of church and state is alive and well. The Supreme court has clearly defined the teaching of creationism in the public schools as unconstitutional from (Epperson v Arkansas) in 1968 to (Levake v Independent School District) in 2001. Monkey Girl by Edward Humes is an excellent resource for those who would like to read about some of these Supreme Court cases. Yes, the separation of church and state remains intact, so far, however what would be the out come if the religious right had their way.
Did Eve Dance with the Dinosaurs?
The fossil record would argue that Eve did not, in fact, dance with the dinosaurs in the garden. In fact, Eve must have lived about 65 million years after the last of the beasts walked the face of the earth. If you find yourself surfing the web, however, you may find (on an intelligent design web site) some not so convincing pictures of dinosaurs in cave paintings, or art depicting dragons, which is clearly their proof that Eve did in fact live peacefully in a time when there was no violence on earth. All animals lived peacefully together until Eve was tempted by the serpent, and then I suppose those Dinosaurs went nuts with rage and began killing each other. Thank God they did not get Adam or Eve, or none of us might be here now.
The "Theory" of evolution
Creationists would argue that since evolution is just a theory it should be taught alongside the theory of Intelligent Design. Guess what, evolution is a theory just like the theory of gravity; should that also be eliminated from the science curriculum? A theory in science is an explanation that has predicative power and has been verified through experimental data. The Theory of evolution is proven every influenza season, unfortunately, when the virus evolves to improve it's chances of infecting people who may be immune to last years variety.
Evolution for Schools/Creationism in the church
Science belongs in the classroom and God belongs in the house of worship. If schools were required to teach all the theories of Creation (Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, ect...) There would be little time left over for teaching anything else.
